5/10. Srila Prabhupada

gave us the 7 purposes,

  • 1To systematically propagate spiritual knowledge to society at large and to educate all people in the techniques of spiritual life in order to check the imbalance of values in life and to achieve real unity and peace in the world.
  •   º  º   2To propagate a consciousness of Krishna (God), as it is revealed in the great scriptures of India, Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. 3To bring the members of the Society together with each other and nearer to Krishna, the prime entity, thus developing the idea within the members, and humanity at large, that each soul is part and parcel of the quality of Godhead (Krishna). 4To teach and encourage the sankirtana movement, congregational chanting of the holy name of God, as revealed in the teachings of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. 5To erect for the members and for society at large a holy place of transcendental pastimes dedicated to the personality of Krishna. 6To bring the members closer together for the purpose of teaching a simpler, natural way of life.   º  º
  • 7With a view towards achieving the aforementioned purposes, to publish and distribute periodicals, magazines, books and other writings.

Periodicals were the crucial tool Srila Prabhupada first proclaimed. The essential means to achieve the profound goals he envisioned.

6/10. HDG Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Prabhupada

, following in the footsteps of HDG Bhaktivinoda Thakur

, who began publishing Sajjan Toshini as early as 1882, championed spiritual periodicals in the 1920s. He published magazines for various audiences:

  • 1Nadiya Prakash - A widely accessible magazine for the masses, published in both Bengali and English.
  • 2Gaudiya - For practitioner devotees, later inspiring the name Gaudiya Math.
  • 3The Harmonist – For English-speaking elite class.
  • 4Bhagawat –For Hindi heartland of India in Hindi.
  • 5Kirtan – For Assam region in Assamese.
  • 6Parmarthi – For Odisha in Odia.

Together, more content was authored in these magazines than the world's most voluminous epic, the 100,000-verse Mahabharata.

7/10. Srila Prabhupada

, continued the tradition

, of publishing periodicals that was initiated by HDG Bhaktivinoda Thakur and further developed by HDG Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada himself devoted, the greatest amount of his time and effort to a periodical, even calling it the "backbone of this movement",

— Back to Godhead magazine.

8/10.Today, our tradition of periodicals has significantly diminished

, and Back to Godhead magazine, the forever backbone of the movement, now fighting for survival.

Its distribution has become minimal, limited primarily to the congregations of a few temples. During the final decade of his life, Srila Prabhupada, despite limited resources, successfully translated books into 60 languages. However, periodicals in those languages could not be produced at that time and have rarely been since. Now, despite the tremendous efforts of dedicated devotees, even in English and Hindi, the widespread distribution of periodicals has largely faded.

However, a potential solution exists.
